Granny’s German Coleslaw

Matthew 5:13-16 NIV “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Stay Salty, I saw this sign for YEARS and can you believe I didn’t realize what it meant?! 😅 I will admit I honestly thought it meant something entirely different, but it wasn’t until one day I saw someone just walking by wearing a shirt and under the stay Salty it had Matthew 5:13. You may be thinking now Alicia what does this have to do with German coleslaw and well it has everything to do with it. (Long story short I would’ve never tried this recipe on my own and don’t forget if you don’t want to read my story just click that lovely jump to recipe button 😎) Anywho how many times do we just jump to assumptions or “judge a book by its cover”. We see something that is different or not “socially acceptable” and automatically assume that means it’s bad or at least just not good. This can really be about anything, but for the purposes of this post I am going to focus on food. So when I see something different than I am used to eating I sometimes think 😬 hmm I dunno about it. I love all kinds of foods and I don’t know why when I have seen this recipe in the past in the box I would just assume it wasn’t going to be something I liked, but when I really thought about it, I love pickles, and essentially this is a quick pickled cabbage with onions and peppers….when I put it like that uh yes please I’m all in! Sometimes we just have to let go of comfort and be open to where God is leading us, because his plans will always be way better than anything we can come up with I can promise you that.

I’m working on this whole storytelling and writing ordeal if you can’t tell. This is the first episode of Granny’s recipe box series. My mom gave me this idea, you pick a recipe at random from your Granny’s Recipe Box, and make the recipe with whatever ingredients you have on hand. I only needed to substitute celery seeds for celery leaves, and this recipe was so simple and delicious! You can make it even easier if you get already chopped cabbage.

My Granny was such an amazing woman, loved Jesus with all her heart, and I truly think she would have loved this series. She loved cooking and prior to her passing I did tell her about me starting a YouTube channel with me cooking and she didn’t really understand YouTube so she said it sounded like I had my own cooking show, and she thought that was just the coolest thing.

So y’all let me know, will you be trying the German Coleslaw, do you have any recipes you were not so sure about that you ended up really enjoying? What is your favorite recipe from your Granny, and what do you call your Granny?

Notes

  • Feel free to use any variety of cabbage onions or bell peppers I think they would all work beautifully in this recipe
